The Church Porch.
The church porch was extended and decorated in preparation for the Consecration of the Church in June 2000. The impressive holy water stoup (the black cylindrical object supported by the column) by the main doors is the original font dating back to the construction of the church in the early 1960s. Its present location is not entirely inappropriate as in many medieval churches, St. Edburg's included, the font is found close to the door, the symbolism being one of the Sacrament of Baptism as entrance to the Church. It is a custom that on entering a Catholic church one dips the fingers of your right hand in the holy water by the door and make the sign of the cross thus recalling your own entry into the Church through the Sacrament of Baptism.
On the other wall are displayed the certificate commemorating the Consecration of the Church and a listing of the priests that have served Bicester since the 1860s when the presence of the Roman Catholic Church was re-established following the Reformation and 1883 when St. Mary's School opened giving the fledgling Catholic community a permanent place to worship.
