Reflections for the week

First Reading: The Prophet Isaiah is the ‘prophet of consolation’. He consoles the people with words of hope: “Make a straight highway for our God, do not fear for the Lord comes in glory”. He comes to receive us, like a shepherd receives his sheep.

Second Reading: During the persecution the early Christians asked themselves: “why does the Lord not manifest Himself and come to our help?” St. Peter provides the answer in today’s reading: “God has patience. He gives us enough time to reform ourselves”. St. Peter exhorts us to do our best to live ’without spot or stain’ so that God will find us prepared.

Gospel: What did John the Baptist convey?

He announced the advent of Christ, someone who is ‘greater than he’.

He proclaimed that Jesus comes to save all men, liberate them from sin and death.

He preached that Jesus would baptize them with the holy Spirit to make them heirs of God’s Kingdom.

So on our part, we have to repent for our sins and reform ourselves. Demanded is a new life, a conversion of heart. The advent message of this Sunday compels us to orient our life to Christ. The Lord is coming and we have to receive him. We have to remove all obstacles and make way straight to receive him in our hearts.

Fr. John Y. Batthula. Parish Priest.

Parish Handbook cover

PARISH HANDBOOK ON SALE A mine of useful information about the parish only £5.00 a copy.
CHURCH HEATING AND PRESBYTERY WINDOWS

PRESBYTERY WINDOWS Quotations to replace the presbytery windows that are in a dire condition have now been received. The cost will be in the region of £29,000.00

CHURCH HEATING As you are aware the church heating is neither efficient or cost effective. In order to preserve our church building and to feel more comfortable, we need to replace the existing under floor system which was originally installed 50 years ago with a modern, efficient system. To install gas central heating it would cost £47,000 inc. VAT, plus £4,789 inc. VAT for infrastructure works. £51,789 in total.

Now I am appealing to every family in the parish to contribute in a generous way, as is financially possible to you to help us meet the total costs. Donations can be made by cheque to ‘Parish of the Immaculate Conception’ or by Bank transfer. Please contact the parish office for details.
