Space, or the lack of it, had long been a problem at the original site of St. Mary's School in Piggy Lane. With 200 children enrolled and with classes having to use the head-teacher's office and even a classroom at St. Edburg's School, as early as the 25th of August 1956, the minutes show that the school managers were considering problem; the solution being the building of two new classrooms on a green field site off Queen's Avenue. Work began the following year. At a cost of £12,000, the buildings which were ready in the spring of 1958 and marked the beginning of a gradual move that the school whould make to its new home. By the summer of 1965 additional classrooms and an assembly hall which would double as a dining hall and gymnasium had been built.
