A procession makes its way out of the Market Square and on to the London Road passing the King's Arms Hotel. Next door to the King's Arms is The Bon Bon, then a sweet shop - there is a sign for Cadbury's Chocolate visible in the window in the first photograph. It is now an estate agent. In the third photograph, the shop next to that, Gino's (?) with the vertical stripes under the name is now offices for Cherwell District Council while the one further along, next to Barclay's Bank is another estate agent.
Although seldom, if ever, seen today, it was then customary for women to cover their heads in church or during religious celebrations.
Thanks to Jean McIntosh and Anna Kustra for the loan of the photographs. |
