Fr.Thomas Foynes and Miss. Sabina Mannion with some of the St. Mary's children during a Corpus Christi Procession. The pictures were taken at the European Voluntary Workers Camp on Graven Hill. Following the end of the Second World War Eastern Europe fell under the sphere of influence of Joseph Stalin's Soviet Union. The result was that many Easter Europeans, Poles and other nationalities, were unable to return home without running the risk of deportation or imprisonment. The E.V.W. Camp on Graven Hill was a temporary solution until the residents could be resettled.

The second picture is inscribed on the reverse, "With compliments to Miss. Sabina Mannion from Fr. Peter Syfler", and is dated 11th June 1960. Fr. Syfler was the Polish Chaplain.

Thanks to Jean McIntosh for the loan of the photographs.
