Archdiocese of Birmingham.
Parish of the Immaculate Conception, Bicester, Oxfordshire.
Corpus Christi Procession.
1954.
The photograph, dated 1954 on its reverse shows a Procession of the Blessed Sacrament, presumably to celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi. The Blessed Sacrament is being carried in a monstrance, still in regular use in the parish, by a priest vested in cassock, cotta, stole, cope and humeral veil and accompanied by a deacon in a dalmatic. The priest appears to be of oriental ancestry. Escorting the Blessed Sacrament are four members of the parish community carrying a canopy one of whom, at the front, closest to the camera, is believed to be Alfred Smith. It is not known where the photograph was taken. The only 'clue' is that other than a couple of houses, there is a bus stop visible behind the pole of the canopy carrier at the extreme right of the picture.
Thank you to Angie Nelson for the loan of the photograph.
